Rose Ridge is dedicated to producing the finest quality meat sheep in Australia by using the genetics from of the world's oldest breeds of British Sheep - The Wiltshire Horn - to produce the Wiltipoll.
These sheep are amazingly easy to manage and produce one of the worlds finest meat cuts. The breed's biggest assets are their skin, coat, fertility, mothering, adaptability, low husbandry, and lean meats.
The Wiltshire has a skin that has formed over centuries of evolution and is a tougher hide that can withstand sunburn, grass seeds and conveniently annihilate skin problems found in other breeds. Lambs are born with a wool coat and a hairy undercoat. When they begin to cycle they shed their wool in about July (in South Australia ) and they are left with a hairy summer coat that protects them against many environmental elements. Then they re-grow the wool in Autumn ready for the Winter.
The Wiltipoll is a seasonal breeder but studies show that the first pregnancy's of the season, deliver single lambs while many later pregnancies will have twins and triplets are common ( quads are not unfamiliar). The way they mother their offspring comes with the age of the breed and the Wiltipoll has all the important qualifications of the perfect nurturer including hardiness, ability to forage , good milking and easy lambing.
Though most sheep are adaptable, the Wiltshire's history reveals that the sheep has a large variety of different terrains ranging from mountainous and rocky cold terrain to the hot grass plains. Because they shed their wool and have thicker hides they are care free compared to most other breeds. The wool shedding means no crutching, no shearing and very little problems related to wool breeds i.e. Lice, Fly-strike. Wiltshire Meat is lean and tender. The are a large sheep with well set shoulders, well sprung ribs and wide hindquarters that give them a characteristic wedge shape.
